Napoli’s woes deepened significantly on Sunday as they suffered a crushing 3-0 loss to Torino, sparking intense protests from fans and further embarrassment for the struggling Serie A champions.

Outraged supporters hurled flares onto the pitch at Stadio Olimpico Grande Torino during this latest humiliating defeat, leaving Napoli languishing in ninth place on the league table.

Their historic Scudetto triumph from last season now feels like a distant memory as Napoli continues to plummet with each passing week. This recent loss, their third in four matches across all competitions, was entirely merited following a dismal performance in Turin.

The absence of Nigerian forward Victor Osimhen was conspicuous as Walter Mazzarri’s team failed to find the net for the fourth consecutive match. They are a far cry from the formidable force that clinched the title last season.

“We have to apologise to the fans for the performance… we’re trying to find ways to stimulate the team and get back to some sort of normality,” expressed Napoli’s sporting director, Mauro Meluso.

Meluso addressed DAZN after a series of post-match discussions with Mazzarri and the team, assuring that the suspended coach wouldn’t face dismissal. “We, the club, and the team have complete trust in the coach, so that’s not a path we’re considering,” he affirmed.

Mazzarri was tasked with tidying up the mess left by his predecessor Rudi Garcia. However, Napoli finds themselves a staggering 20 points adrift from league leaders Inter Milan and closer to relegation territory than the top of the standings.

Antonio Sanabria opened the scoring just before halftime, while debutant Pasquale Mazzocchi’s wild challenge on Valentino Lazaro led to his red card in the 50th minute. Mazzocchi, who joined from Salernitana, had been on the field for mere moments before Nikola Vlasic doubled Torino’s lead with a stunning long-range strike.

Napoli struggled to regain composure and should have conceded a third goal shortly after the hour mark when Sanabria struck the post and Duvan Zapata missed the rebound.

Nonetheless, Alessandro Buongiorno sealed an emphatic victory for Torino in the 66th minute with a powerful header beyond Pierluigi Gollini.
