Gareth Southgate Criticizes Fifa’s Ambitious 2030 World Cup Plan

England coach Gareth Southgate has voiced his concerns over FIFA’s ambitious plan to host the 2030 World Cup in six countries spanning three continents. He believes this approach tarnishes the tournament’s reputation.

FIFA’s proposal aims to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the inaugural World Cup held in Uruguay in 1930. The plan involves hosting the opening matches in South America, with three South American teams involved. Spain, Portugal, and Morocco are set to continue hosting the tournament, welcoming all 48 participating nations as co-hosts.

Southgate expressed his disapproval, stating, “I think it has brought down the reputation of this tournament. I don’t like it. The first three games are in South America, and then around the world, the home teams will have an advantage due to their different national records.”

Highlighting the logistical challenges, he added, “To be clear, you go to play Argentina and then travel back to play another country. It’s a big difference between playing Argentina in Buenos Aires and Casablanca.”

Southgate’s comments come after the Euro 2020 competition was held in 11 different cities across 11 countries, with Italy ultimately defeating England in the final at Wembley Stadium.
