In an unusual turn of events, both Brighton and Chelsea recently announced that their managers, Roberto De Zerbi and Mauricio Pochettino, respectively, would be departing. De Zerbi, who excelled with Brighton, is now linked with both Chelsea and Manchester United. Despite his claim of not having another job lined up, reports suggest he is a strong contender for the vacancy at Stamford Bridge.

According to Sky Sports, Chelsea has narrowed their managerial search to four candidates: De Zerbi, Ipswich Town’s Kieran McKenna, Leicester City’s Enzo Maresca, and Brentford’s Thomas Frank. Hiring any of these managers would require Chelsea to pay for the remaining contracts, including De Zerbi, who is currently on gardening leave.

The situation at Chelsea is particularly perplexing. Only Arsenal and Manchester City earned more points in the Premier League than Chelsea in 2024. Pochettino’s team finished the season strong, securing sixth place and a spot in European competition.

Although it took some time for the former Tottenham manager to implement his vision, the team was starting to gel on the field. Replacing him could potentially hinder the club’s progress, as they aim to compete for major trophies each season.

Chelsea initially hoped to appoint a new head coach within days, but the process may extend longer than expected as they seek the right fit. De Zerbi, known for his dynamic playing style, has been acknowledged by Brighton chairman Tony Bloom as a talented yet challenging manager to work with.
