Shocking scenes unfolded as football fans clashed before the French Cup final between Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) and Lyon at the Stade Pierre Mauroy. Supporters of both teams engaged in violent confrontations at a motorway toll booth in Fresnes-lès-Montauban, 62 miles from the stadium.
The incident, which was videoed, showed one man being kicked by a mob as thick black smoke billowed from a burning vehicle. President Emmanuel Macron, in attendance at the match, condemned the violence, urging for a joyful and sporty event. An Arras police spokesman confirmed that two coaches were set alight and at least eight police officers were injured, although no serious injuries were reported among the fans. The clashes come amid heightened security measures in Lille, where alcohol in glass or metal containers was banned, and separate areas were designated for fans.
Earlier in the season, a Lyon match against Marseille was called off due to similar violent incidents. The French government is preparing for a massive security operation for the upcoming summer Olympics in Paris. PSG aims to end the season with a domestic treble, while the fixture also marks Kylian Mbappe’s last game for the club ahead of his summer departure
