His sister-in-law has been sentenced to three years in prison for sharing private explicit videos of Hwang without his consent. The Seoul Central District Court found her guilty of posting the videos with the knowledge that they would be disseminated widely, stating that the nature of her crime was very serious. In addition to sharing the videos, the defendant also attempted to blackmail Hwang by sending messages indicating that it would be “fun” if the videos were leaked. Despite acknowledging her wrongdoing, she was sentenced to three years in prison.
Hwang denied the claims against him, and he pleaded for leniency for his sister-in-law, which reportedly prevented the court from handing down the four-year sentence that prosecutors were seeking. The defendant expressed regret for her actions, stating in her final testimony that she had caused great harm to the victims. The allegations against Hwang resulted in his suspension from the South Korea national team.
