Former England striker Jermain Defoe could be on the verge of landing his first managerial role with talks ongoing with his former club Sunderland. Defoe, currently a coach with Tottenham’s U18s, has revealed discussions with Sunderland officials, although no formal interview has taken place yet.
Speaking to the Sunderland Echo, Defoe mentioned his interest in bringing certain players to the club to help them return to the Premier League. Caretaker manager Mike Dodds has been in charge since Michael Beale’s sacking in February, with Sunderland currently sitting 15th in the Championship. Defoe, a fans’ favorite during his three seasons at Sunderland between 2014 and 2017, expressed his desire for the managerial role, citing the recent appointment of Tom Cleverley as Watford boss as motivation. Defoe highlighted his connection with the Sunderland fans and his interest in the job, although he acknowledged the competition for the position.
Defoe’s time at Sunderland was marked by his on-field performances and his close relationship with young fan Bradley Lowery, who tragically passed away from cancer in 2017. Defoe’s potential appointment would bring him full circle at a club where he left a lasting impact both on and off the pitch.
