Former Onana teammate says Harry Maguire poor defense is spoiling the Manchester United’s goalkeeper image

Babel, a former player at Ajax and Liverpool, suggests that Manchester United's defensive setup, particularly the presence of Harry Maguire, hampers goalkeeper Onana's performance by limiting his passing options.

Babel, formerly associated with Liverpool as well as Ajax, indicated that the players ahead of Onana at Manchester United are not as adept technically as his former teammates at Ajax, placing Onana at a disadvantage. The retired 37-year-old specifically singled out Harry Maguire, stating that the center-back doesn’t offer Onana the passing options he previously enjoyed.

Onana has faced ongoing criticism throughout the season due to sporadic errors, although these occurrences have become less frequent. However, scrutiny intensified after United’s 1-1 draw with Burnley, during which Onana conceded a late penalty that cost the team points. This incident, where Onana accidentally struck Zeki Amdouni while attempting to clear a high ball, echoed a similar occurrence during his Premier League debut against Wolves in August.

Babel remarked, “I know the spotlight is on Onana a lot in this United team, but the mistakes we’ve seen are as a result of a combination of things.” He emphasized that at Ajax, Onana benefited from a backline and Frenkie de Jong in front of them who excelled with ball possession, enhancing Onana’s performance. However, playing alongside Maguire, whose style differs, poses challenges for Onana.

While acknowledging Onana’s errors, Babel noted that some issues, such as positioning, are within Onana’s control. Despite recent struggles, Babel expressed confidence in Onana’s talent and hopes for a better showing next season with Manchester United.

Looking ahead, Onana aims to conclude the current season strongly, positioning himself well for the upcoming 2024-25 campaign, where a full pre-season could prove beneficial. His last clean sheet dates back to a 2-0 victory over Everton in March, and he seeks to rectify this in remaining fixtures against Crystal Palace, Arsenal, Newcastle, and Brighton.
