Chelsea have emerged as prominent spenders in the Premier League over the past two years, amassing controversy by splurging more than £1 billion on players, predominantly youngsters, following Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital’s acquisition of the club. Despite the hefty investments, success on the pitch has eluded them. With four managerial changes in the last two seasons, signs of a shift in approach seem to be surfacing, especially as Mauricio Pochettino hints at a potential pivot towards recruiting seasoned players this summer.

Addressing the media, Pochettino remarked [via The Standard], “We can keep going in the same way with the policy [to sign young players].”

“But in the squad, we have Thiago Silva, Raheem Sterling and Marcus Bettinelli. Maybe Marcus isn’t playing but he does a fantastic job helping the young guys.”

“We have experienced players in the squad. It is not going against the project to have some players who are helping the young guys to perform, to be professional, and to understand what it means to be in the Premier League and to be at Chelsea.”

“We need to talk and decide the strategy for next season.”

Pochettino’s statements indicate his confidence in remaining a part of Boehly’s plans beyond the current season, as he confirmed in his remarks. Even in the absence of European qualification, Pochettino affirmed his commitment to the project.

In an interview with the media [via Chelsea News], he stated, “Will I stay without European football? Of course, because when I arrived here, we already knew that we were not going to compete in Europe. And I said yes to the project and the idea to come here and to build, you know, a squad to be competitive and to try to reach this level. So yes, that is no problem for me.”

Throughout the season, Pochettino’s side has grappled with inconsistency, compounded by a string of injuries affecting key players like Christopher Nkunku, Moises Caicedo, and Enzo Fernandez. Despite their struggles, they currently occupy ninth place in the Premier League standings, just two points ahead of 13th-placed Bournemouth.
