Manchester United goalkeeper Andre Onana surprises with ‘he’s big enough’ remark on Erik Ten Hag’s future

Onana believes Ten Hag can defend his position as United boss on his own, despite pressure and doubts. United's poor performance puts Champions League qualification at risk.

Onana asserts that while he continues to support his manager, Ten Hag is capable of defending his position as United’s boss independently. The Dutchman has faced significant pressure in his second season at Old Trafford and has been on the verge of dismissal several times. With United trailing behind Spurs and Aston Villa by 11 points, their chances of qualifying for the Champions League seem slim. If they fail to achieve this goal, Onana may find himself playing under a new manager.

Amid reports this week suggesting that United players believe Ten Hag has given up hope of staying at the club beyond the summer, Onana shared his thoughts. Having previously worked under the Dutchman at Ajax and being brought to United for a hefty fee, Onana was seen as the solution to the team’s goalkeeping issues. However, his initial struggles did not help Ten Hag’s case. Nonetheless, Onana has recently shown signs of returning to top form.

Speaking to Sky Sports, the goalkeeper expressed, “You deliver good today and yesterday, tomorrow you don’t deliver good and they are always going to remember what you did last. And unfortunately, you can’t change that.”

“Erik is a very good manager. I’m not here to back him because he’s already big enough to back himself.”

“He did great things for United last season. But this is football and I always say football is temporary.”

United faces a crucial match against Bournemouth on Saturday evening. Onana emphasized that Ten Hag must rely on his own abilities to secure a victory, thereby keeping alive their faint hopes of Champions League qualification and his own job prospects for next season.
