The 30-year-old Spanish athlete encountered a harrowing incident on May 28, 2023, during a pilgrimage in his native Andalusia. While attending El Rocio, Sergio Rico, a former star of Sevilla and current PSG player, was struck by a mule cart and a runaway horse, resulting in severe head and neck injuries.

Rico’s family explained the circumstances surrounding the accident, noting that he had traveled from Strasbourg to Malaga, then on to El Rocio with the club’s approval following PSG’s Ligue 1 victory. Shortly after arriving and spending time with loved ones, he was heading towards the Pontifical Mass near the chapel when the unfortunate collision occurred.

Following the incident, Rico endured a 26-day coma and spent 36 days in intensive care, undergoing surgical procedures to address his injuries and brain trauma. In July 2023, he was discharged from intensive care, followed by his release from the hospital a month later.

Having last played competitively during a loan stint at Mallorca in May 2022, Rico underwent a series of evaluations by PSG medical staff. Additionally, he was monitored in Seville and by the French Football Federation (FFF). Fortunately, he received clearance to resume training without requiring protective headgear.
