Sir Jim Ratcliffe is in the final stages of negotiations for his acquisition of a 25% stake in Manchester United. However, while this move signifies change, the composition of the club’s new board might still reflect elements of the previous regime.

INEOS owner Ratcliffe has been in talks to secure a minority ownership in the Old Trafford club, aiming to invest £1.25 million for his share. His bid for a complete takeover previously competed with Sheikh Jassim bin Hamad Al Thani but gained momentum after the latter withdrew, leaving Ratcliffe with a clear path.

Recent reports suggest that Ratcliffe is close to finalizing the deal, with an official announcement potentially on the horizon. According to The Times, negotiations have entered their conclusive phase, and Ratcliffe’s team has been diligently working on the paperwork, expecting an approvals process to follow suit.

Despite nearing completion, formalization of the deal might still take a while. The Premier League’s ratification process alone could extend into the New Year. Additionally, any agreement must be disclosed through the New York Stock Exchange, where the club’s shares are listed.

While preparations are underway for Ratcliffe’s assumption of control over the club’s football operations, issues regarding the reconfiguration of the board are causing delays. Ratcliffe is set to join the board alongside Sir Dave Brailsford and Joel Glazer, the latter’s involvement sparking controversy due to past protests against him at Old Trafford.

Though fans hope for increased investment in the transfer market, the likelihood appears slim. Football director John Murtough hinted at a quieter January window during a recent fans’ forum, emphasizing the club’s focus on the summer transfer period and compliance with financial fair play rules. Maintaining a disciplined approach to spending remains a priority, balancing player acquisitions and sales moving forward.
