Manchester United’s Aaron Wan-Bissaka under fire, Peter Schmeichel questions defender’s mentality in Brentford clash

Erik ten Hag experimented with Aaron Wan-Bissaka in an unfamiliar left-back position during Manchester United's match against Brentford, where Wan-Bissaka's lapse in concentration contributed to Brentford's late equalizer.

Erik ten Hag opted to deploy Wan-Bissaka in an unconventional left-back position during Saturday’s match against Brentford, a decision that backfired when the defender was partially responsible for The Bees’ last-minute equalizer. During a critical moment, when Ivan Toney received a lofted pass within the United penalty area, Wan-Bissaka momentarily lapsed, allowing the English striker to set up the pass that led to Kristoffer Ajer’s goal. Adding to the frustration, just three minutes prior, Mason Mount had handed the visitors the lead.

Following the game, club legend Schmeichel expressed his dismay, accusing the Red Devils’ full-back of lacking pride. He criticized Wan-Bissaka for what he perceived as lackadaisical effort, stating that the former Crystal Palace player was merely “jogging” on the pitch and failed to close down Toney.

In an interview with SuperSport, the former Denmark international remarked, “When you observe Wan-Bissaka during the Brentford goal, it epitomizes what I mean by standards. Wan-Bissaka is positioned on the left, the ball comes in, and observe his movement. He’s casually walking, strolling, even jogging!

“And Ivan Toney would have been offside had he followed the back-four line up and then that goal wouldn’t have happened. Look at him [Wan-Bissaka] coming out! Look at it! That’s not Manchester United, that’s not pride, that’s not high standards. That’s not focussing on what your job is. He has cost – not to blame him for this – but at that moment, because of what he did, or didn’t do, a simple thing like concentrating, they equalised.”

Erik ten Hag’s team, currently trailing fourth-placed Aston Villa by 11 points, faces a crucial Premier League fixture against struggling Chelsea, where securing three points is imperative for their pursuit of a higher position in the league standings.
