The Athletic’s investigation highlights that despite significant concerns within United, Ten Hag still maintains backing from a portion of his squad. The report specifies that while several players harbor grievances—varying in validity—the entirety of the team hasn’t withdrawn their support. However, if there’s no swift improvement in results, it wouldn’t be unexpected for that backing to diminish.

To put it plainly, United’s performance this season has been lacklustre. Occupying the eighth spot in the Premier League and ousted from both the Champions League and European competitions, it’s been a dismal campaign.

Yet, the club is entangled in deeper complexities, especially with the new INEOS investment group’s impending involvement. Indeed, some discontented players have voiced concerns about the club’s current management.

Ten Hag’s team has faced criticism for their performance during one of their worst years historically, and there’s a pressing need for better results. Nevertheless, the Dutch manager has been given a bit of leeway for the time being.

In 2023, United suffered one of their bleakest periods in history, losing 21 games. The club has only faced higher losses in a calendar year in 1930 (28), 1972 (25), and 1921 (24).

2023 stood out as one of United’s worst years, marked by 21 losses, a figure surpassed only in 1930 (28), 1972 (25), and 1921 (24) throughout the club’s history.
