The England manager is fully immersed in preparations for the upcoming European Championship in Germany this summer, yet he has taken a moment to engage with reporters, offering insights into his persona for the benefit of England supporters.

In an interview with The Athletic, the 53-year-old responded to a range of inquiries about himself, including one query he particularly dislikes, reflections on advice for his younger self, and aspects of his character that might catch people by surprise, among others.

In conversation with The Athletic, Southgate candidly addressed the question he dislikes being asked, revealing, “(Laughs) It’s being asked for a selfie when you’re in the middle of an airport and you’re trying to keep your head down, with the cap on, and trying to avoid it.”

“Normally, I’m trying to get through somewhere without any attention. Of course you always want to help people out if they want a picture, but you’re trying to stay incognito and not create a fuss, really.”

He further disclosed one aspect that might astonish readers, stating, “The only thing I am doing at the moment is trying to learn German for the summer.”

“I was conscious when we went on the recces (reconnaissance trips) and to the draws, I actually hadn’t got a clue. I wasn’t very proud of that. So I’m trying to at least be able to have some interaction with people there.”

Southgate has held the position of England manager since 2016, and the Euro 2024 tournament will mark his fourth major tournament at the helm of the Three Lions. While his contract with the national team is due to expire in December, negotiations for an extension are yet to be finalized.

For the time being, his primary focus remains on maximizing the potential of the talented England squad under his charge. The team is slated to encounter Brazil and Belgium in friendly matches in the approaching days, as preparations for the summer tournament intensify.
