Andreas Brehme, famed for clinching West Germany’s triumph in the 1990 World Cup final with a winning goal, has passed away at 63 years old.

The accomplished left-back secured victory with an 85th-minute penalty against Argentina in Rome, under the leadership of Franz Beckenbauer.

Throughout his career, Brehme represented Germany 86 times and played for esteemed clubs like Kaiserslautern, Bayern Munich, and Inter Milan.

Reports from German newspaper Bild reveal that Brehme passed away on Monday night in Munich, likely due to a cardiac arrest. Despite efforts at the Ziemssenstrasse clinic, where he was admitted, he could not be revived.

Brehme had been profoundly affected by the recent loss of his former coach and mentor, Beckenbauer, adding to the family’s grief. He is survived by his partner, Susanne Schaefer, and two adult sons from a previous marriage.

Schaefer, speaking on behalf of the family, expressed deep sorrow over Brehme’s sudden demise and urged privacy during this challenging period.
