The Portuguese forward sustained a left knee injury following a challenge from Brentford’s Christian Norgaard during Liverpool’s 4-1 victory at the Gtech Community Stadium. Jota required on-field treatment for several minutes before being stretchered off.

On Monday, The Telegraph reported that Jota’s injury was severe, ruling him out of Sunday’s Carabao Cup final against Chelsea. Klopp has now confirmed that the 27-year-old will face an extended period away from the pitch.

Speaking to the media ahead of Liverpool’s midweek Premier League match against Luton Town, Klopp provided updates on Jota and Curtis Jones, who was also injured in the Brentford game. Klopp mentioned that No.1 goalkeeper Alisson won’t be ready to return soon either. “With Curtis – with injuries you have important days like day five, day ten when you then judge the situation again because nobody reacts in the same way. It depends on the pain level and stuff like this, so I couldn’t say or give you a time frame even if I wanted to. It’s not great, definitely not. I would like to sit here and say absolutely no issues but obviously, we have some. So, not available: Ali (Alisson), that’s a muscle injury where we don’t know exactly how long it takes, but definitely not for the foreseeable time coming back. Diogo (Jota) with a knee issue is ruled out. Curtis with a bone ligament issue is ruled out.”

Alisson faces a tight schedule to be fit for the Carabao Cup final, with Trent Alexander-Arnold and Dominik Szoboszlai already ruled out. “We will see for tomorrow, you see the line-up early enough and then you can see who made it and who didn’t make it.” Klopp added. “We’ll know tomorrow who’s available for selection.”

“A little bit longer term like Trent (Alexander-Arnold) and Dom (Szoboszlai), they are on their way back but not in team training yet. So that means they are not available as well.” said Klopp.

As Klopp navigates through challenges in his final season at Liverpool, the only positive news is Mohamed Salah’s recovery from an injury sustained during Egypt’s AFCON fixture. Salah, who replaced Jota against Brentford, scored upon his return and provided an assist for Alexis Mac Allister.

Liverpool has won three of their last four Premier League matches, scoring 11 goals. They lead the Premier League table by two points over Arsenal and four points over Manchester City, albeit having played an extra game. Liverpool aims to extend their winning streak against Luton Town before focusing on the Carabao Cup final against Chelsea at Wembley.
