Alessandro Bastoni disclosed his initial desire to depart Inter upon his arrival in 2019, yet Antonio Conte’s persuasion led him to stay, and now the Italian defender envisions no other club as his home.

Speaking on Andrea Ranocchia’s podcast ‘Frog Talks’, Bastoni unveiled his inclination to leave the Nerazzurri back in 2019, during his transition to the Stadio Meazza. Inter secured Bastoni in a €31m transfer from Atalanta in 2018, although the Italian defender spent a season on loan at Parma before joining Inter.

Reflecting on his decision, Bastoni remarked, “I spent one season at Parma and then I was lucky to find Antonio Conte here,” He acknowledged his urge to depart that season, considering the arrival of Diego Godin alongside Milan Skriniar and Stefan de Vrij already in the defensive lineup. Despite his intentions, Conte’s persistence convinced him to remain.

During Conte’s tenure, which spanned two seasons and included a Serie A title triumph in 2020-21, Bastoni enjoyed regular game time, notching two goals in 33 appearances across all competitions during his debut season at the Stadio Meazza.

Bastoni reminisced, “Barella and I talk about it once in a while. We struggled so much, but we were so in shape that, in the end, we always recovered.” He praised Simone Inzaghi for assembling a cohesive unit and emphasized the valuable lessons learned from teammates like Ranocchia, Marcelo Brozovic, and Samir Handanovic.

With his contract extending until June 2028, Bastoni expressed contentment at Inter, declaring, “I am happy here now. I am one of the most ‘experienced’ players. The Inter world is amazing, and I don’t see myself elsewhere at the moment. I truly feel at home.” He drew inspiration from the fervent support of the fans, noting their unwavering passion, which solidified his commitment to the club’s cause.

Bastoni concluded, “We play in front of 75,000 fans, and when we go to the stadium, I see 85-90-year-old people in the crowd waiting for the team bus. The passion these people have makes me think: ‘Why should I leave when I can offer a moment of joy?’ I have no doubts, we are a nice group with young players like myself, Barella, Dimarco and Lautaro.”
