Experienced defender Lorenzo De Silvestri emerged from the bench and delivered a crucial last-minute equalizer, securing Bologna a 1-1 draw against Genoa in Serie A on Friday. Bologna, eager to secure a position in European competition, had suffered a disheartening 3-0 defeat against Udinese in their final 2023 match, facing the prospect of another loss in their first game of the new year.

Genoa claimed the lead after 20 minutes with Albert Gudmundsson netting a free-kick, marking his eighth goal of the season.

However, De Silvestri, aged 35 and introduced as a late substitution for Bologna, salvaged a valuable point with his goal in the fifth minute of injury time.

This crucial strike averted their team from enduring consecutive defeats for the first time in this season.

De Silvestri emphasized, “We showed we had character. This kind of match is important for the development of a young team like ours,”

Bologna maintains their position in fifth place in the Serie A standings with 32 points, narrowly trailing behind the Champions League qualification spots by just one place.
