The Turkish Super Cup final between Galatasaray and Fenerbahce has been canceled at the last minute, with both teams reportedly refusing to take the field. The match, scheduled to be held at the Al-Awwal Stadium in Riyadh, was called off after a dispute arose over the ban on Ataturk banners and t-shirts.
According to reports, players from both teams opted to stay in their hotels, leading to the abrupt cancellation. The ban on certain symbols and attire seems to have been a point of contention with the Saudi Arabian hosts. The Turkish Football Federation, along with both clubs, released a joint statement expressing gratitude for the host country’s efforts but citing disruptions in the organization as the reason for the postponement. The rescheduled date for the 2023 Super Cup final is yet to be announced.
This development follows the recent postponement of all Turkish matches earlier this month, prompted by an incident where a referee was punched by a club president after a Super Lig clash.
