Porto vs. Arsenal:
Arsenal’s standout performance in the 2006 final remains their best in the Champions League. However, with enhancements made to their squad over the summer and notable victories over Manchester City in the league, as well as a triumph over them in the Community Shield through penalties, they should be taken seriously as contenders in their return to the competition. While their collective lack of European experience might pose a challenge, their advancements make them formidable. Although the team could improve their goalkeeping situation and seek a top-class finisher, these issues are relatively minor compared to those faced by most European sides.

Napoli vs. Barcelona:
Both teams seem to grapple with replicating their previous season’s heights. Napoli, despite retaining most of their star players, faces a tough campaign following Luciano Spalletti’s departure and Walter Mazzarri’s takeover. Meanwhile, Barcelona’s recent performances, especially as Robert Lewandowski’s goal-scoring prowess wanes, paint them as an ordinary side. Although they outdid Porto in their group stage clashes, their inferior goal difference raises concerns.

Paris Saint-Germain vs. Real Sociedad:
PSG’s progression from a challenging group hints at their potential, even amid a transitional phase emphasizing team unity and local talent development over individual stars. However, their unremarkable performance in the group and controversial qualification through a penalty raise doubts. Real Sociedad, despite a modest position in La Liga, topped a challenging group, showcasing defensive strength with the fewest goals conceded in the stage and clean sheets in all their away games.

Inter vs. Atlético Madrid:
Atlético, led by Diego Simeone, displays consistent form, topping their group and demonstrating offensive prowess behind Griezmann and Morata. On the other hand, Inter, last season’s runner-up, finished second in their group but leads Serie A with a strong domestic showing. Changes in their lineup, including Dzeko’s departure and Sommer’s arrival, reflect their adaptability.

PSV Eindhoven vs. Borussia Dortmund:
Peter Bosz’s return with PSV aims to prove a point against Borussia Dortmund after their loss in the group stage. PSV’s dominance domestically contrasts with their European struggles. For Dortmund, the departure of Bellingham ushered in a period of adjustment, impacting their league performance but not hindering their Champions League campaign.

Lazio vs. Bayern Munich:
Bayern, despite a shaky defense and recent domestic loss, progressed easily from their group. Lazio’s lackluster Serie A start contrasts with their ability to find crucial goals in the Champions League, notably from goalkeeper Ivan Provedel.

Copenhagen vs. Manchester City:
City’s historical tendency to peak in the spring, coupled with returning key players, positions them as a formidable force despite a relatively average season start. Copenhagen’s surprise progression from the group stage underlines their potential, despite missed opportunities.

Leipzig vs. Real Madrid:
Real Madrid’s flawless group stage contrasts with their less fluent performance in domestic competitions. Meanwhile, Leipzig navigated their group as expected, balancing losses against strong teams with comfortable wins elsewhere.
