Estonia claims Euro 2024 play-off position despite no wins, rule oddity prevails

Thanks to the Nations League, Estonia might be playing football at Euro 2024 next summer despite losing all of their qualifying matches and scoring less goals than San Marino.

Despite failing to secure a single victory in their qualifying group, Estonia still holds a possibility of participating in Euro 2024. Despite finishing at the bottom of Group F with seven losses and only one draw against Azerbaijan, their wins against Malta and San Marino in the Nations League offer a glimmer of hope. Thomas Haberli’s team topped their Nations League group, positioning them for Path A, leading to a potential match against Germany.

The selection of 12 teams for the playoffs is based on Nations League performance, predominantly favoring group winners from Leagues A, B, and C. However, if these teams are already qualified, replacements are sought from the next highest-ranked teams in their league. Estonia’s unexpected chance arises from a scenario where fewer than four teams from a league enter the playoffs, granting the first slot to the best-ranked group winner of League D — Estonia, in this case.

Ironically, San Marino managed to score more goals in their Euro 2024 qualifying matches, hitting the net thrice compared to Estonia’s two goals, both scored by Rauno Sappinen, one each against Austria and in the draw with Azerbaijan.

The looming playoffs next March could pair Estonia against Poland, Finland, Iceland, Ukraine, or Wales. Wales missed their opportunity for automatic qualification due to a draw with Turkey, now joining the uncertainty of the playoffs.
