In a recent episode of the Undr the Cosh podcast, John Gregory, 69, shared a story from his time managing Crawley during the 2013/14 season.
Jack Grealish, on loan from Aston Villa, was playing for Notts County at the time. Gregory claimed that he successfully got Grealish substituted off during a match after taunting the young player.
According to Gregory, he engaged in verbal taunts directed at Grealish, criticizing his connection to Aston Villa and suggesting he wasn’t up to par. Gregory recalled saying, No wonder they’ve f****** sent you out to Notts County. ‘no wonder they don’t f****** want you up there. ” Eventually, Grealish was substituted off, and Gregory asserted that Grealish went home and complained to his dad, who in turn spoke to one of Gregory’s friends.
Grealish, however, disputes Gregory’s account. On his Instagram page, Grealish dismissed Gregory’s story as untrue, labelling him a “clown.” Despite being substituted off in a match against Gregory’s Crawley in December 2013, Grealish denies that it was a result of Gregory’s touchline comments. In a subsequent encounter, Grealish played the full 90 minutes, securing a 1-0 win.
During the 2013/14 season, Grealish played a total of 39 times for Notts County, scoring five goals. His career progressed as he later joined Aston Villa’s first team and eventually secured a record transfer to Manchester City under Pep Guardiola.
John Gregory, who managed Crawley from December 2013 to December 2014, attributed his departure to health problems. After a hiatus, he returned to management in 2017 with Indian Super League team Chennaiyin FC, winning the Indian Super League title. Gregory’s history with Aston Villa includes managerial stints, an assistant role, and even a two-year tenure as a player from 1977 to 1979.
