Roberto de Zerbi catching Real Madrid’s eye after impressive stint with Brighton

According to reports, Roberto De Zerbi has surfaced as a surprise target for Real Madrid as they compile a list of management candidates.

Real Madrid Looking For Options And De Zerbi One Of Them

Reports suggest that as Carlo Ancelotti’s current contract with the Spanish giants approaches its conclusion, Real Madrid is actively considering potential successors.

Ancelotti’s contract at the Bernabeu is set to expire in the summer, and he is expected to depart as he has agreed to assume the role of head coach for the Brazil national team in 2024.

In light of Madrid’s recent loss, which marked their first defeat of the season, speculation about his replacement has gained momentum.

Following their 3-1 defeat to bitter rivals Atletico Madrid on Sunday, Cadena SER reported that the club has compiled a list of potential candidates to replace Ancelotti when the time comes.

Among these candidates is Brighton manager Roberto De Zerbi, who has enjoyed tremendous success since taking the helm of the south coast club in September.

Under De Zerbi’s leadership, Brighton has excelled, earning a place in the Europa League at the conclusion of the previous season.

Their impressive performance has continued into the current season, as they currently hold the third position in the Premier League table with five wins in six matches.

Despite De Zerbi’s remarkable achievements, it appears he may not be the frontrunner for the position.

Instead, former Real Madrid midfielder Xabi Alonso is reportedly the top candidate, having impressed with his managerial work at Bayer Leverkusen.

The German club is currently level on points with Bayern Munich in the Bundesliga and has yet to suffer a defeat this season.

Alonso is not the only former professional player with Real Madrid ties being considered for the role.

Both Alvaro Arbeloa and Raul Gonzalez are rumored to be in contention, with both individuals currently involved with the club’s youth squad and the Real Madrid Castilla team.

Interestingly, even Ancelotti himself has expressed support for Alonso potentially taking over the role in the future.

In a recent interview, the Italian manager stated, “Look, I’ve had Alonso, as a player. His knowledge of football is top level.”

“He’s doing great with Bayer Leverkusen because he does these readings. This ability, I wish him as well as Arbeloa and Raul, I really wish [for] them to coach at Real Madrid one day.”
