Italy fails to qualify after drawing with Northern Ireland 0-0 on Monday

BELFAST. Northern Ireland and Italy could not score a single goal.

BELFAST. Northern Ireland and Italy didn’t manage to score any goal on Monday. Italy was decisively superior in terms of ball possession (71%), but that was not enough for the Italian team to win the match and qualify directly to the World Cup. Its faith will be decided at the playoff.

Italian head coach Roberto Mancini is still optimistic about the chances of his team. Mancini commented:

“We can’t do anything about it now, we have this game in March and will try to give our best. At the moment, we are struggling to score goals, despite dominating possession and the initiative. Northern Ireland put everyone in defense and we struggle to break sides like that down.

It’s a pity, because we should’ve sealed the group long before it came to this. We just need to rediscover what characterized us up until today. We had two missed penalties in the decisive matches, so that shows we had the chances to win.”

The match was played at the Windsor Park stadium in Belfast on Monday and it started at 7:45 pm local time. The referee was Istvan Kovacs with the help of Vasile Marinescu and Mihai Ovidiu Artene. The 4th official was Horațiu Mircea Feșnic. The weather was cloudy. The temperature was cold at 8.6 degrees Celsius or 47.52 Fahrenheit. The humidity was 89%.
