Andre Onana, a goalie for Manchester United, has been recalled by Rigobert Song to the Cameroon national team.
Onana departed the Cameroon team midway through the World Cup due to disagreements with manager Song and was later recalled.
WHAT OCCURED? After an alleged altercation over tactics with the manager of Cameroon, the United goalie left for his own country halfway through the 2022 World Cup. The goalkeeper reportedly departed the camp before declaring his retirement from international football at the age of 26 and Song said that Onana had urged him to not consider him for the next two group games against Serbia and Brazil.
Onana has since changed his mind about retiring, and the two have decided to put their disagreements aside.
THE BIGGER PICTURE: After naming Onana in his most recent Cameroon team, Song told reporters: “It all hinged on him. He was aware of his obligations. He should be on the list since he acted morally. The door was always open, he’s one of the top goalies. With Andre, there was never a difficulty. We are pleased that he is back with the group at this time.
