VIDEO. Pele’ and the impossible runaround dummy vs. Uruguay

Pele, the only player in history to win three World Cups, passed away at the Albert Einstein hospital in Sao Paulo after a battle with cancer; he rose to fame after Brazil defeated Sweden to win the 1958 World Cup when he was just 17 years old.

Pele scored 1283 goals in his incredible career. However, there was one moment of his career that remained incredibly iconic, even if, on that occasion, he didn’t score.

The Great Runaround

There was a memorable moment from Pele during the 1970 World Cup semi-final, when he sells Uruguay goalkeeper Ladislao Mazurkiewicz a clever dummy that almost results in a goal for Brazil.

Ladislao Mazurkiewicz, the best goalkeeper in the competition, was run around by Pele in an attempt to score the game’s fourth goal, but he was unsuccessful.

At the very end of the second half, a counterattack was just getting going when Tostao played a through pass to Pele. Mazurkiewicz quickly came off his line as Pele sprinted up the middle and was met by him.

Pele arrived first and tricked Mazurkiewicz by not touching the ball, which caused it to roll to the goalkeeper’s left while Pelé moved to the right of the goalkeeper. Pele turned too much as he shot, causing the ball to miss the far post by a narrow margin as he shot while circling the goalkeeper to collect.
