Roma has decided against exercising their €15m purchase option for Renato Sanches, the midfielder on loan from Paris Saint-Germain. Sanches will head back to Paris by the end of June, concluding what has been a disappointing stint at the Stadio Olimpico during the 2023-24 season.

Initially joining Roma last summer from Benfica and Bayern Munich on loan with a buy option, Sanches’s acquisition would have been mandatory under certain circumstances. However, his contribution has been minimal, featuring in only seven Serie A matches and five Europa League games, tallying just 260 minutes of playtime. This equates to an average of slightly over 21 minutes per competitive appearance.

Reports from Fabrizio Romano suggest that PSG will seek to offload Renato Sanches during the upcoming summer transfer window. PSG had secured his services from Lille in August 2022 for a fee of €10m plus €3m in bonuses. At the time of his transfer, Sanches signed a five-year contract, meaning he still has three years remaining until its conclusion in the summer of 2027.
