Newcastle midfielder Sandro Tonali has voluntarily taken a pay cut from his £132,500-a-week wages after being handed a 10-month ban for betting breaches by the Italian FA. The 23-year-old has not played since receiving the punishment in October. Tonali’s ban was extended by a further two months after he admitted to more betting breaches since joining Newcastle last summer.

As a result, he was fined £20,000 and warned about his future conduct. Journalist Mark Douglas reported that Tonali’s decision to reduce his wages helped to lessen the financial penalty, although the exact reduction is undisclosed. Some of the bets that led to Tonali’s suspension were revealed, including accumulator bets on Newcastle’s matches and a single bet on their match against Manchester City. The midfielder’s new ban is suspended throughout the 2024/25 campaign, with the two-month ban only to be served if he commits further betting breaches.

Tonali, who started five of Newcastle’s opening nine Premier League games, last played in the Champions League against Borussia Dortmund on October 25. Newcastle manager Eddie Howe emphasized the importance of supporting Tonali through this difficult period, acknowledging the challenges the young player has faced in transitioning from Italy to England.
