During the first leg of the Champions League quarter-finals between Manchester City and Real Madrid on Tuesday, all eyes weren’t just on the match; they were also on Pep Guardiola’s wrist. The Manchester City manager’s choice of wristwear, an opulent Richard Mille watch valued at £1 million ($1.26 million), became a global talking point.

As reported by TNT Sports, a subsidiary of Warner Bros. Discovery and CNN’s parent company, Guardiola sported this extravagant timepiece at Madrid’s Estadio Santiago Bernabéu. This limited-edition watch, one of a mere 50 in existence, is hailed as the lightest mechanical watch ever crafted, weighing a mere 18.83 grams, including the strap. To put it in perspective, that’s roughly the weight of four sheets of A4 or US letter-size paper.

Originally designed for tennis legend Rafael Nadal to wear during matches, every aspect of this watch was meticulously engineered to minimize weight. Its monobloc back, constructed from carbon, not only ensures resistance to shocks and scratches but also contributes to its remarkable lightness. Moreover, the titanium baseplate is ingeniously attached to the case by four steel cables, each a mere 0.35mm (0.01 inches) in diameter.

Guardiola’s sartorial flair on the sidelines often earns him praise, a trait that traces back to his early days in football. Even as far back as 1993, during his tenure at Barcelona FC, Guardiola demonstrated an affinity for fashion, strutting the catwalk for renowned Spanish designer Antonio Miró.
