Leicester City received a reprieve as the English Football League (EFL) deferred any potential points deduction related to Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR) until next season. Despite facing charges laid by Premier League lawyers, the EFL acknowledged its lack of authority to enforce penalties and shifted the matter back to the Premier League for prosecution.
However, this decision leaves Leicester vulnerable to starting the next season with a deficit of points if they regain promotion to the Premier League. The club had contested the charges, accusing both the Premier League and EFL of collusion, and sought an injunction against the imposition of penalties before the current season’s conclusion.
In recent times, Everton and Nottingham Forest faced deductions over Financial Fair Play (FFP) breaches, while Sheffield United began the 2022/23 season with a two-point deficit. Meanwhile, Manchester City and Chelsea await their fate amid ongoing investigations into alleged financial irregularities, with decisions expected in the coming months.
