Barcelona’s decision: Why they turned down Kylian Mbappe to sign a flop Dembele- insights from Ex-Sporting director

Former Barcelona sporting director Bordas revealed on Spanish TV that he would have signed Kylian Mbappe for the club in 2017 if it were up to him, using the funds available after Neymar's departure to PSG.

During an appearance on the Spanish TV show El Chiringuito, Bordas, who served under former presidents Sandro Rosell and Josep Bartomeu in a role now held by Deco, emphasized that had the decision been his, Kylian Mbappe would have been signed by Barcelona in 2017. Back then, the club had a hefty €222 million to invest following PSG’s record-breaking acquisition of Neymar. However, they opted to pursue Ousmane Dembele instead, a move that ultimately proved unsuccessful as Dembele failed to realize his potential during his time with the Catalan giants.

Barcelona’s choice to prioritize Dembele, securing a deal potentially valued at €147 million for the French winger, ultimately backfired. Dembele fell short of expectations and was subsequently transferred to PSG last summer after a disappointing stint at Barcelona, whereas Mbappe continued to excel in Ligue 1 and impress on the international stage with France.

Bordas expressed, “If I had been in charge, Mbappe would have played for Barca,” said Bordas. “I moved for Mbappe. He could have come to Barca. We didn’t specify a price, but he would have gone for €100 million. The coaches told us that they wanted Dembele because of the other players we had. There was the option to bring both of them.”

It appears evident that the opportunity for Mbappe to join Barcelona has long passed; currently, Real Madrid remains the club most strongly linked with the French sensation. Reports suggest that Mbappe has already agreed to terms with Real Madrid, poised to join forces with Jude Bellingham and others. Speculation regarding Mbappe’s transfer has been relentless over recent seasons, and it seems his much-anticipated move will finally materialize this summer.
