Napoli’s sporting director, Mauro Meluso, conveyed the players’ apologies following Saturday afternoon’s 3-0 home loss against Gian Piero Gasperini’s Atalanta, emphasizing the remaining eight games of the 2023-24 season as opportunities to “honor” the club’s dedicated supporters.

Despite Napoli hitting the woodwork twice, goals from Aleksei Miranchuk, Gianluca Scamacca, and a late strike from Teun Koopmeieners sealed the Partenopei’s fate in a disappointing home defeat.

Speaking in front of DAZN cameras post-match on behalf of the squad, Meluso expressed regret for the heavy loss suffered in front of their fans, urging the team to focus on their weekly objectives without dwelling too much on the defeat.

Addressing inquiries regarding star midfielder Piotr Zielinski, who is poised to join Inter on a free transfer after the season’s end, Meluso reiterated the importance of meritocracy amidst discussions surrounding Zielinski and plans for the summer transfer market.

Reflecting on the defeat to Atalanta, Meluso acknowledged the disappointment felt by the team and technical staff, refraining from delving into deeper discussions about the team’s performance. He emphasized the need for the team to regain their competitive edge and morale promptly, stressing the importance of Naples’ passionate supporters in revitalizing the players’ spirit.

Underlining the journey under Calzona’s leadership, Meluso expressed hope for a string of victories moving forward, despite the perplexities arising from the first half of the match.
