Ralf Rangnick, Formerly of Manchester United coach, surfaces as unexpected contender for Bayern Munich managerial position while Xabi Alonso’s prospects dwindle

Bayern Munich is hopeful of appointing the Leverkusen boss as Thomas Tuchel's replacement, but with uncertainty surrounding Xabi Alonso's decision, they are considering Ralf Rangnick as an alternative, favored due to his ability to speak German.

The Bavarian giants remain optimistic about securing the Leverkusen manager as Thomas Tuchel’s successor. However, with Alonso’s decision unlikely to come soon, Bayern’s leadership is devising backup plans, with reports from Kicker suggesting Rangnick has emerged as the primary alternative.

Roberto De Zerbi of Brighton and Hove Albion also garners interest at the club, but a preference for a German-speaking candidate appears to position Rangnick as a surprising contender for one of Europe’s premier managerial positions.

Last month, Bayern’s announcement of Tuchel’s departure at the season’s end immediately positioned Alonso as the top candidate. Yet, with job opportunities at Liverpool and Barcelona also on the horizon this summer, Bayern’s aspirations are far from assured.

Further complicating matters is Leverkusen’s pursuit of their first Bundesliga title. Alonso has understandably refrained from discussing his future as his team navigates an unbeaten season, while also vying for domestic cup glory and Europa League success.

Rangnick stepped in as interim manager at United following Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s dismissal in November 2021. However, his tenure at Old Trafford was marred by disappointment as the team endured their lowest-ever Premier League points tally of 58.

As Bayern prepares to face Borussia Dortmund in Der Klassiker, they find themselves in an unusual position with little at stake, given Alonso’s Leverkusen holds a commanding 10-point lead atop the Bundesliga with just eight rounds remaining.
