Newcastle United midfielder Sandro Tonali is facing additional disciplinary action after allegedly breaching betting rules, including gambling on matches involving his current club. Tonali, who joined Newcastle from AC Milan last summer for £55 million, had already received a ten-month suspension in October for illegal betting while at AC Milan.
The Football Association (FA) has charged Tonali with misconduct, accusing him of breaking FA Rule E8 50 times by placing bets on football matches between August 12, 2023, and October 12, 2023. Tonali has until April 5, 2024, to respond to the charges. Despite his ban, Tonali has been able to train with Newcastle’s squad. His agent has stated that the player is dealing with a gambling addiction and hopes that Tonali’s experience will serve as a warning to others facing similar issues.
Questions have been raised about Newcastle’s due diligence in signing Tonali, with manager Eddie Howe stating that there was no way the club could have known about his gambling history. The club has expressed support for Tonali and stated that he continues to cooperate with investigations.
🚨 Official: Sandro Tonali has now been charged by the FA with 50 offences of placing bets earlier this season.
