Alves, who was convicted of rape and handed a sentence of four years and six months in prison last month, now has the opportunity to secure his release from jail while he appeals the verdict. This comes after he posted his €1m bail bond, and according to reports from the Daily Mail, he has surrendered his Spanish and Brazilian passports to mitigate any flight risk. Having spent 14 months behind bars, the prospect of his freedom now looms closer.

Last week, Alves was informed of his eligibility to leave prison but was unable to afford the bail bond at the time. However, he has since managed to pay it, with his lawyer suggesting that he had been left destitute. Nevertheless, there is anticipation of a substantial payout from Spain’s tax agency, amounting to €9.2m (£7.9m/$10m), which might account for his sudden ability to meet the bail requirement. Initial reports speculated about assistance from Neymar’s family in covering the bail, but they have since denied any involvement.

Alves’ former wife, Dinorah Santana, has distanced herself almost entirely from the once-renowned Brazilian footballer, declaring on Spanish television that he holds no significance in her life and asserting, “For me, he has died.”

Once Alves settles his bail bond, he will be released from prison, although the outcome of his appeal remains uncertain.
