About Sofya Zhuk

Sofya Andreyevna Zhuk is a former professional tennis player from Russia. Born on December 1, 1999, in Moscow, Russia.

Zhuk’s journey in tennis began at a young age. She trained at the Justine Henin Academy in Belgium under the guidance of coach Olivier Jeunehomme until 2014-2015. After that, she moved to the United States and continued her training at the IMG Academy. Towards the end of 2018, she moved to Miami, Florida, and trained with Patricia Tarabini.

Her early career was marked by impressive victories. In 2014, she won her first tournament at Shymkent and became only the 17th 14-year-old in ITF history to win an open tournament at that age. This achievement put her in an elite group that includes former world number ones Justine Henin and Dinara Safina.

The pinnacle of Zhuk’s career came in 2015 when she competed as an unseeded 15-year-old at Wimbledon. She won the junior girls’ title against fellow Russian and No. 12 ranked junior Anna Blinkova in straight sets, 7–5, 6–4. Remarkably, Zhuk did not drop a set in the whole Wimbledon tournament. This victory made her only the second Russian girl to win the Junior Wimbledon title.

Zhuk made her WTA Tour singles debut at the 2016 Miami Open, where she received a wildcard into the main draw. Although she lost in straight sets to Zhang Shuai in the first round, it was a significant milestone in her career.

In the following years, Zhuk continued to make strides in her career. In 2018, she reached the second round of qualifying at the Australian Open. She also reached her first 125K final at the inaugural WTA 125K series tournament in Newport Beach, California. Despite losing to Danielle Collins in the final, it was a significant achievement for the young player.
