Liverpool officially announced on Wednesday that Hughes will become the club’s new sporting director, marking a significant move within a broader restructuring led by Michael Edwards, the former sporting director who will now assume the role of CEO.

Hughes, a former Scotland international, will leave his current position as Bournemouth’s sporting director to join Liverpool at the end of the season. His career in football administration began after retiring as a player, initially starting in Bournemouth’s recruitment team under Eddie Howe’s guidance. Hughes’s strategic contributions earned him promotion to technical director during Bournemouth’s Premier League tenure.

Liverpool had been without a permanent sporting director since Julian Ward’s departure last summer. During this interim period, the club enlisted German football executive Jordi Schmadtke to assist Klopp during the summer transfer window, which saw notable signings such as Alexis Mac Allister, Dominik Szoboszlai, Wataru Endo, and Ryan Gravenberch.

Hughes has a distinguished football career spanning both playing and administrative roles. He began professionally at Arsenal and later played for Bournemouth and Portsmouth, earning caps for the Scotland national team. After retiring in 2014, Hughes returned to Bournemouth before embarking on his administrative journey.

Expressing his pride, Hughes stated, “I am incredibly proud to be offered this opportunity. Liverpool FC is a unique club, and I’m grateful to be given a chance to serve it in this capacity.” He emphasized the importance of making sound decisions to enhance the team’s success and excite the supporters.

Edwards expressed his delight at Hughes’s appointment, citing their longstanding professional and personal relationship. He praised Hughes’s judgment and track record, highlighting his suitability for the role and his enthusiasm for the challenges ahead.

In his new position, Hughes will be instrumental in shaping Liverpool’s future squad, particularly amid the transition following Jurgen Klopp’s departure. Working closely with Edwards, he aims to lead the club into a bright future, with fans eagerly anticipating the impact of these strategic appointments.
