The 24-year-old forward for Barcelona, who is currently still under contract with Diego Simeone’s Atletico Madrid, is looking forward to the upcoming match against his original club this weekend, anticipating a hostile reception from Atletico fans. Joao Felix expects the entire Barcelona team to face a chilly welcome from the home crowd, but he anticipates it will be particularly intense for him as he returns to the Wanda Metropolitano wearing the Barcelona jersey.

In an interview with DAZN, Felix remarked, “It’s going to be a very complicated environment for the whole team. It’s going to be a little worse for me, but I’m a football player and I want to be accustomed to this type of thing. It motivates me more, I enjoy these important matches, [they] have extra motivation.”

Felix joined Atletico Madrid back in 2019 for a staggering £113 million ($143m), marking the club’s highest-ever transfer fee for a player. However, struggling to adapt to Simeone’s tactics, he sought temporary moves elsewhere. His first stint away was in the Premier League with Chelsea last season, and now he finds himself at Barcelona, where he has scored five goals in 21 appearances. Notably, one of those goals came as the match-winner against Atletico back in December.

With Sunday’s La Liga clash against Atletico approaching, Felix hopes to replicate his previous performance from December. Having only played ten minutes off the bench in the recent Champions League match against Napoli, he is expected to be fresh for another encounter with his former club. After the Atletico fixture, Felix and his Barcelona teammates will head for international duty before returning for a game against Las Palmas on March 30.
