According to reports from Italian sports publications, Benjamin Pavard, Stefan de Vrij, Denzel Dumfries, and Marcus Thuram were highlighted as some of the most disappointing performers for Inter in Madrid, while goalkeeper Yan Sommer stood out as the Man of the Match for the Nerazzurri.

Inter endured a challenging evening at the Cívitas Metropolitano, facing Champions League elimination at the hands of Atletico Madrid, ultimately losing in a penalty shootout.

It proved to be a difficult night for the Nerazzurri, described by Gazzetta as a setback to both their aspirations and Italian football as a whole.

Numerous Inter players failed to make an impact in Madrid, particularly in defensive and offensive roles.

Pavard, De Vrij, Dumfries, and Thuram were subjected to criticism by Italian sports outlets, with Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Lautaro Martinez also falling short of expectations.

Gazzetta singled out Pavard as Inter’s poorest performer, highlighting the former Bayern Munich defender’s misguided approach upon entering the field, which tested Inzaghi’s patience.

While Gazzetta rated Inter’s coach Inzaghi with a score of 5/10, Tuttosport and Corriere dello Sport gave him slightly higher marks at 6/10.

According to Gazzetta’s analysis, Inzaghi’s tactical changes leaned towards a more defensive approach, ultimately resulting in Inter adopting a five-man defensive line. Despite this, Inzaghi’s strategy was centred around ball possession to counter Atletico Madrid’s high intensity.

Conversely, Sommer received unanimous praise as Inter’s standout performer against Atletico, as indicated by all Italian sports newspapers. This assessment speaks volumes about the Nerazzurri’s overall performance and their unexpected exit from the Champions League.
