Reactions to racist chants aimed at Vinicius Jr. were heard outside Atletico Madrid’s stadium ahead of the team’s Champions League clash. This isn’t the first instance of Vinicius Jr., who plays for Atletico’s fierce rivals Real Madrid, facing such derogatory remarks. Just before the Champions League match, social media circulated videos showing individuals insulting the forward, labeling him with racial slurs like “chimpanzee,” as per reports from AS.

In the 2021 Madrid derby, Atletico fans shamefully subjected the Brazilian to monkey chants and gestures. Despite Vinicius Jr. urging intervention from the Spanish government, an investigation concluded that the supporters’ actions did not constitute a criminal offense, cited by the Daily Mail. Prosecutors attributed this decision to the intense nature of the Madrid derby, where the incidents occurred fleetingly amidst an atmosphere of extreme hostility.

This isn’t the first time Atletico fans have singled out Vinicius. In February 2023, four fans received sentences for hanging a mannequin donning a Vinicius shirt from a bridge with the message ‘Madrid hates Real.’

Now, Atletico could face significant legal consequences for their supporters’ racist behavior towards Vinicius, reports the Daily Mail. Unlike previous instances where the defense cited the heated rivalry, this time, Real Madrid was not involved in the fixture, eliminating that argument. Vinicius Jr. has previously advocated for lifetime bans for fans found guilty of racist abuse.
