Rafa Benitez has been sacked by Celta Vigo after just eight months at the club, following a string of disappointing results. The former Liverpool manager, 63, won just one of his last five matches in charge of the La Liga side and leaves with Celta Vigo sitting 17th in the league, just two points above the relegation zone.
The decision to part ways with Benitez was announced in a club statement on social media, coming two days after Celta’s 4-0 loss to Real Madrid. The statement praised Benitez and his staff for their dedication and professionalism but noted that the team had not achieved the expected results. Benitez’s departure comes shortly after he expressed interest in managing either Spain or England, should Gareth Southgate leave his role after this summer’s Euros.
Benitez has an impressive managerial resume, including winning the Champions League, two La Liga titles, the UEFA Cup, the FA Cup, the Club World Cup, and the Europa League. Despite his achievements, Benitez is not considered one of the frontrunners to replace Southgate as the next England manager. Eddie Howe and Graham Potter are currently the leading candidates according to bookmakers.
