Lega Serie A has opted to impose a fine on Napoli following president Aurelio De Laurentiis’ decision to stage a protest against broadcaster DAZN.
The Partenopei’s president, known for his penchant for controversy, was incensed prior to his club’s encounter with Juventus on March 3. He erupted upon spotting a cameraman in the tunnel, exclaiming ‘f**k off’ and ‘they must not do it, f**k!’. It later transpired that the cameraman was a member of Napoli’s staff.
De Laurentiis was further angered by the rescheduling of Napoli’s Serie A fixture against Atalanta, moved from April 1 to March 1, a change he attributed to DAZN. Consequently, he opted to prohibit the club from engaging with the Italian broadcaster.
According to Corriere della Sera via TMW, DAZN lodged a formal complaint against De Laurentiis and Napoli a few days subsequent to the incident, addressing a letter to Lega Serie A. Following an analysis of the situation, Lega Serie A decided to take disciplinary action, fining Napoli €100,000 for their demonstration.
Lega Serie A CEO Luigi De Siervo emphasized the contractual obligations that clubs in the topflight have with DAZN, asserting that any breaches of these agreements will not be tolerated. Lazio also incurred a €10,000 fine as a result of the same issue.
