Chelsea has disclosed a £90.1 million ($115m) deficit for the 12-month period ending June 30, 2023, marking a significant financial setback. In the previous year, the club was £121.4m ($154m) in debt, indicating a concerning trend of financial strain at Stamford Bridge.

The recent financial report, released by BlueCo22, the entity overseeing the acquisition of Chelsea by Clearlake Capital and Todd Boehly from Roman Abramovich, paints a bleak picture. BlueCo22, which also possesses French club Strasbourg, recorded a staggering £653m ($833m) loss after taxes from March 2022 to June 2023.

Chelsea’s lavish spending in the transfer market, exceeding £1 billion ($1.3bn) under current ownership, has raised eyebrows regarding their compliance with Financial Fair Play (FFP) and Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR). The latest financial data has only intensified these concerns.

Despite mounting questions, Chelsea asserts its commitment to operating within regulatory boundaries, stating, “The club continues to balance success on the field together with the financial imperatives of complying with Uefa and Premier League financial regulations. The club has complied with these financial regulations since their inception in 2012 and expects to do so for the foreseeable future.”
