Solskjaer eagerly seized the opportunity to bring Ronaldo back to Manchester United late in the summer of 2021, sparking widespread excitement and a frenzy on social media. However, he has acknowledged that Ronaldo’s return did not unfold as planned and discussed the challenges posed by the player’s passionate personality.

Speaking on the Stick to Football podcast, presented by Sky Bet, Solskjaer remarked, “Cristiano – when you know him and speak to him, he wanted to play three out of four games, he realised he’s getting older as well. But when you leave him out once, he’s not happy!” Solskjaer told the Stick to Football podcast, brought to you by Sky Bet. “Part of signing Cristiano Ronaldo was getting that passion from him, but that did have its complications. You’ve got Mason Greenwood, Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial, who can learn from Cristiano as he’s the best, the most disciplined and he’s been the best player in the world, and you think he’s going to help them. When he arrived at the club, he told me to start him for three games in a row, and then put me on the bench for the fourth game, but he’s so passionate so when I did that, he didn’t like it.”

Ronaldo’s return to United started impressively, marked by notable goals on his debut against Newcastle and crucial strikes in the Champions League against Villarreal and Atalanta. However, the team’s performance declined, culminating in heavy defeats against Leicester City, Liverpool, Manchester City, and Watford, leading to Solskjaer’s dismissal in November. Solskjaer acknowledged the impact of Ronaldo’s presence on the team’s dynamics, especially regarding pressing tactics. Despite the difficulties, Solskjaer emphasized the mutual respect between him and Ronaldo, highlighting the player’s professionalism during disappointments.

Solskjaer’s successor, Erik ten Hag, encountered further challenges with Ronaldo, who departed a match against Tottenham prematurely and subsequently faced suspension. Ronaldo’s tenure at United ended abruptly in November 2022 after a candid interview with Piers Morgan, where he criticized the club.

Although Solskjaer has declined numerous coaching offers, he remains open to a return to management. He emphasized the importance of prioritizing personal well-being and hinted at the possibility of resuming coaching on his own terms, reflecting on his experiences at United and his desire for autonomy in future endeavours.
