Former Premier League star Garry Monk has made a comeback to English football after spending three years away from the sport. The 44-year-old has been appointed as the new manager of Cambridge United, filling the vacancy left by Neil Harris. Cambridge United, currently positioned 19th in League One, aims to climb up the table and steer clear of relegation under Monk’s leadership.
Monk’s contract at the Cledara Abbey Stadium extends until the summer of 2026. In a statement, majority owner Paul Barry expressed satisfaction with Monk’s appointment, highlighting his high pedigree and leadership skills. Monk, who previously managed clubs like Swansea, Leeds, Middlesbrough, Birmingham, and Sheffield Wednesday, brings valuable experience to the role.
Monk’s first game in charge will be against Northampton this Saturday, and Barry emphasized the collective effort required to secure the club’s League One future. The announcement of Monk’s appointment marks a new chapter for Cambridge United, with the club hoping for a successful journey ahead under his guidance.
