Napoli’s midfielder Jens Cajuste has sustained a muscular injury in his right thigh, sidelining him for several weeks. This setback poses a challenge for Francesco Calzona ahead of Napoli’s Champions League Round of 16 second leg encounter against Barcelona in March.
According to a statement from the Partenopei, Cajuste underwent medical assessments and missed Thursday morning’s training session.
Gianluca Di Marzio reports that Cajuste is expected to be out of action for a minimum of two weeks. Consequently, he will be absent for Serie A matches against Juventus and Torino, as well as the anticipated Champions League fixture against Barcelona on March 12.
Cajuste’s injury is particularly significant considering that coach Calzona cannot rely on senior midfielders Piotr Zielinski and Leander Dendoncker. Both were excluded from Napoli’s Champions League squad list by Walter Mazzarri at the start of February.
Presently, Napoli’s pool of available senior midfielders for the Champions League includes Stanislav Lobotka, Andre-Franck Zambo Anguissa, Hamed Traore, and Jesper Lindstrom. Although primarily listed as a midfielder, Lindstrom has often been deployed on the right wing since his arrival from Eintracht Frankfurt last summer.
Napoli is scheduled to visit Barcelona on March 12 for the match, commencing at 20:00 GMT.
