In Sunday evening’s 1-1 draw in Los Angeles, the Herons managed to secure a point with a stunning goal from Lionel Messi during stoppage-time. This crucial strike occurred just moments after the Galaxy’s Mark Delgado received a second yellow card, sparking controversy throughout the week. Delgado himself expressed disbelief over the decision on social media, sharing a clip of the incident.

When questioned about the foul, which appeared to be a non-contact incident causing him to fall, Busquets responded, stating, “Yes, there was contact. It was very mild. But it was the referee’s decision about the card. I had practically not even seen that he had drawn a card because his back was turned and perhaps he is right that much more is needed for an expulsion because perhaps it was not even a card. A very slight fault that practically touched me.”

Regarding whether he believed the red card influenced their late equalizer, Busquets admitted he thought it did, remarking, “As the game was, I’m sure it was because the goal was after the expulsion and playing with one less can always influence it, but it was a referee’s decision about which we can’t do much more.”

The controversy surrounding the dismissal, compounded by Busquets’ remarks, stems from MLS’s current use of replacement referees instead of regular officials, a situation set to persist into the second week of the season.

The league and the Professional Referees Organization (PRO) have failed to reach an agreement on a new Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) with the Professional Soccer Referees Association (PSRA), resulting in PRO locking out over 240 PSRA members qualified to officiate MLS matches.

The current pool of replacement referees enlisted by MLS includes youth and college officials, along with members of the USL and MLS NEXT Pro.

Next up, the Herons face Orlando City in a South Florida derby on Saturday as Inter Miami aims for their second home victory of the season. Meanwhile, the Galaxy will take on the San Jose Earthquakes in an early-season rendition of the California Clasico.
