Chelsea were reportedly interested in signing Liverpool star Darwin Nunez last summer, with the Uruguayan striker enduring an inconsistent first season at Anfield following his £85 million switch from Benfica. According to reports, Chelsea’s sporting director at the time, Paul Winstanley, admired Nunez during his tenure at Brighton and enquired about the striker’s availability. It was rumored that Liverpool were considering selling Nunez, with a potential swap deal with Atletico Madrid involving Joao Felix being discussed.
However, these claims were false, as Liverpool rebuffed Chelsea’s advances and retained Nunez. Jurgen Klopp’s faith in Nunez has been largely rewarded this season, with the striker scoring 13 goals and providing 11 assists in 37 appearances in all competitions. Despite missing a recent match against Luton due to injury, Nunez remains a key player for Liverpool, although he is a doubt for the upcoming Carabao Cup final against Chelsea.
Meanwhile, Chelsea have relied on Nicolas Jackson up front, who has scored nine goals in 27 appearances since his £32 million move from Villarreal. Mauricio Pochettino has also utilized Armando Broja, before loaning him to Fulham, and has Christopher Nkunku back from injury, with the Frenchman recently scoring against Liverpool in the league.
