This week, Henderson completed his move to Ajax from Al-Ettifaq, bringing an end to his brief and controversial stint in Saudi Arabia. The English midfielder’s primary objective now is to make an impact under Gareth Southgate’s management as England seeks its first-ever victory in the men’s European Championships. However, his opportunity to shine on the field may be delayed until at least February.

Henderson’s initiation at Ajax has been temporarily halted as the club awaits the outcome of a work permit application. Following the UK’s departure from the European Union, Henderson, lacking an EU passport, cannot play without a valid work permit. While his approval is all but assured, the bureaucratic process takes several weeks, pushing back Henderson’s return to European football.

Complicating matters further, there’s a possibility that Henderson may not receive his wages from his time in Saudi Arabia. With his earnings deferred and his departure from Al-Ettifaq, he is set to forfeit the complete payment.

Despite his eagerness to get back on the field, Henderson must watch from the sidelines today as Ajax takes on RKC Waalwijk. The former Liverpool and Sunderland player aims to impress Southgate over the next five months in the Netherlands, gearing up for the upcoming European Championships this summer.
