As reported by The Athletic, the former English international has agreed to extend his contract with the Saudi Pro League club until 2027. Despite the team’s poor performance, the board is supporting Gerrard and has committed to bringing in new signings to reverse their fortunes in the SPL.
Gerrard joined Al-Ettifaq in July 2023 after leaving Aston Villa in October 2022. Since his arrival, the team has struggled for consistency, currently enduring an eight-match winless streak and occupying the eighth spot with just 25 points from 19 matches. Additionally, the impending departure of Henderson from the club will weaken the midfield. However, with the SPL on hiatus due to the ongoing AFC Asian Cup, Gerrard has sufficient time to find a replacement for the experienced midfielder.
Before managing Aston Villa, Gerrard had a successful three-year tenure with Rangers, guiding them to the Scottish Premiership title in the 2020-21 season. Despite initial reservations about the role in Saudi Arabia, Gerrard eventually accepted the offer.
Henderson is reported to have traveled to Amsterdam for his Ajax medical as part of an upcoming move. Meanwhile, Gerrard remains in Dammam, working on a strategy to orchestrate a turnaround when the team resumes action on February 15 against Al-Khaleej in the SPL.
